Ciena Forecasts AI Demand Will Double Market to $50 Billion

Ciena CEO Gary Smith expects AI-driven network re-architecture to double the company's total addressable market to $50 billion by 2029.

Ciena President and CEO Gary Smith announced that artificial intelligence is triggering a multiyear re-architecture of network infrastructure. During a September 3, 2026, earnings call, Smith projected that this shift will double the company's total addressable market from $25 billion to approximately $50 billion by 2029.

Smith described optical networking as a critical enabler for the operationalization and monetization of AI across data center fabrics, AI WANs, and traditional wide-area networks. He noted that the investment cycle will be driven by compounding waves of demand, progressing from cloud connectivity and training toward inference, agentic AI, and robotics.

Despite reporting a beat and raise quarter, Ciena is currently facing supply constraints that limit its ability to meet customer demand. The company expects to end fiscal 2026 with a backlog exceeding $10 billion. Ciena projects a baseline growth of 30% for the following year, provided it can secure the necessary additional supply.
