Bottom Half of US Households See Net Worth Surge
The Federal Reserve reports that the net worth of the bottom 50% of American households rose to $4.28 trillion by mid-2026.
The Federal Reserve System reports that the net worth of the bottom 50% of American households increased from $1.86 trillion at the end of 2019 to $4.28 trillion by the second quarter of 2026. This represents a 129% nominal increase and approximately 78% in real terms. Inflation-adjusted median family net worth has reached $215,900, and 55% of American adults now maintain emergency savings covering three months of expenses.
Despite these financial gains, housing affordability remains a critical issue, with home costs now nearly five times the average household income. This disparity contributes to a gap between objective economic data and public sentiment.
Research indicates that social-media algorithms and partisan political divides distort the public perception of the economy. A 2026 study published in Nature found that engagement-driven algorithms prioritize toxic content and moral outrage over nuance, which amplifies hostility and obscures economic progress.
