Lebanon Pledges Indictments for 70 Officials on Port Blast Anniversary

Lebanon marked the sixth anniversary of the August 4, 2020, Beirut port explosion on Tuesday with marches and vigils in the capital. The blast, caused by nearly 3,000 tonnes of improperly stored ammonium nitrate, killed at least 220 people and devastated large areas of the city. For years, political interference and legal challenges paralyzed the probe led by judge Tarek Bitar.

A shift occurred in early 2025 following the inauguration of President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. Bitar resumed his investigation and submitted a report to the public prosecutor's office in March 2026, reportedly accusing 70 individuals of various offenses. Justice Minister Adel Nassar announced that prosecutors are finalizing the investigation results and expect to release them within 60 to 90 days, which will enable the issuance of a formal indictment.

International and domestic pressure continues to mount for a transparent process. Jean Arnault of the United Nations urged the acceleration of judicial proceedings to break the cycle of impunity. While the current government has pledged accountability, victims' families and lawyers remain skeptical, fearing a partial justice that ignores the origins of the explosives and demanding the imprisonment of those responsible to restore trust in the judiciary.
