ECB Reports AI Investment Boosts Euro Area Economy

Philip R. Lane reports that AI investment is supporting economic activity in the euro area, though digital spending remains significantly lower than in the United States.

European Central Bank Executive Board member Philip R. Lane stated that AI investment and the integration of euro-area firms into global supply chains are supporting economic activity. Speaking at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco’s Economic Research Symposium, Lane noted that while the long-term productivity effects of the technology remain uncertain, AI is expected to increase capital-spending plans for firms by approximately 10% in 2026.

ECB data indicates that digital investment reached 3.3% of euro-area GDP by the end of the first half of 2026, a figure significantly lower than the 7.3% estimated for the United States. Despite this gap, 64% of surveyed firms use AI experimentally or moderately. Workers reporting AI use in the ECB’s Consumer Expectations Survey noted a median time saving of three hours per week.

Lane presented a simulation suggesting that a 30% productivity gain in IT services could increase euro-area output by 3.8% by 2030. He clarified that this figure is a simulation and not a formal prediction.
