Morrisons Closes 100 Stores and 52 Post Office Branches

Morrisons is closing approximately 100 convenience stores and 52 Post Office branches due to rising employment costs, threatening government minimum service levels.

The supermarket chain Morrisons is closing approximately 100 of its convenience stores, a decision driven by rising employment costs. This move will result in the closure of 52 Post Office branches throughout the United Kingdom by early October.

In Essex, three specific branches in Rochford, Great Baddow in Chelmsford, and Defoe Parade in Grays will shut before the end of the year. The Post Office is currently seeking replacement locations to maintain service availability in these affected areas.

Officials warned that these closures, combined with those from TG Jones stores, may cause the total number of Post Office sites to drop below the government's minimum requirement of 11,500. Morrisons is consulting with affected staff to offer alternative roles within the company where possible.
