Houthi Rebels and Yemeni Government Launch Massive Military Escalation

The Houthi group and the internationally recognized government of Yemen have launched hundreds of coordinated strikes against each other and Saudi Arabian targets.

The Houthi group and the internationally recognized government of Yemen have engaged in a massive military escalation, effectively ending the calm established by a 2022 United Nations-brokered truce. Between August 17 and 18, 2026, the Yemeni government launched over 300 military operations using rockets, artillery, and drones across provinces including Marib, Taiz, and Hodeidah to reduce Houthi capabilities.

In response, the Houthis launched ballistic missiles at a Saudi military ship and four escort vessels off the coast of Mocha, claiming the strikes were "precise and direct." While the Houthis reported sinking several warships, government sources claimed the group actually targeted the Amir Khan, an empty civilian vessel. The Houthis further expanded their campaign by striking a Saudi weapons depot in Marib and launching a drone attack on the Aramco oil refinery in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, citing airspace violations over Saada and Hajjah.

This cycle of violence follows a Houthi-imposed naval blockade of Saudi Arabia and a government strike on Sanaa airport in July. The United Nations has warned that these developments risk entangling Yemen in a wider regional confrontation and could return the country to large-scale warfare. Houthi officials justified the escalation as a defense against a Saudi blockade, pledging to target any Saudi military concentrations on land or at sea.
