US Pacific Command Warns China Against Indo-Pacific Dominance

Admiral Samuel Paparo, head of U.S. Pacific Command, declared during a security conference in Kuala Lumpur that the United States will not permit any single nation to dominate the Indo-Pacific region. Speaking via video link, Paparo accused China of shifting from the rule of law to rule by law, utilizing legal claims as weapons of raw power to justify coercive actions.

These warnings align with escalating maritime tensions in the South China Sea. Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro vowed to resist Chinese threats, specifically citing Beijing's expanding military footprint and recent ballistic missile launches. The Philippines has previously accused China of employing water cannons and performing dangerous maneuvers against its vessels.

Amidst these tensions, ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn reported that negotiations between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China for a code of conduct are accelerating. Hourn stated that the diplomatic process to govern behavior in the South China Sea is expected to be finalized within the year.
