Four Nations Donate $15 Million to Pacific Resilience Facility

Fiji, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Denmark pledged $15 million to a Pacific climate fund, bringing its total to nearly $200 million.

Fiji, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Denmark donated approximately $15 million on Wednesday to the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF), a fund owned by island governments to finance climate adaptation projects. The new pledges bring the total fund to slightly under $200 million, though this remains well below the short-term goal of $500 million following COP31 in November and a long-term target of $1.5 billion.

Announced during a pre-COP conference in Fiji, the PRF uses a small grants model to support local initiatives. Current projects include aquifer restoration in the Federated States of Micronesia and mangrove restoration in Palau. To bridge the funding gap, the facility intends to eventually issue bonds on international markets and attract private investors.

During the conference, leaders emphasized the financial necessity of immediate action. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that more is needed now to reduce future remediation costs, while Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown urged delegates to invest to buy the region time. Fiji Climate Minister Lynda Tabuya noted that the fund's goals would be presented at COP31 in hopes of gaining broader global support.
