Russian Drone Strikes Kill Two and Disrupt Kyiv Infrastructure

The Military of Russia launched a massive overnight attack on September 23, 2026, deploying 161 drones across Ukraine, including 82 jet-powered Shahed-type drones. In Kyiv, the strikes targeted the Holosiivskyi, Solomianskyi, and Darnytskyi districts, damaging warehouses, gas stations, and data centers. City authorities reported at least two people killed and 25 injured, while a railway employee was wounded by shrapnel.

Infrastructure disruptions were widespread. Internet providers Pavutyna and UTELS reported network failures and loss of connectivity after their data centers lost power. The national railway operator, JSC Ukrzaliznytsia, reported severe delays of up to nine hours for trains arriving from Zaporizhia, the Dnipropetrovsk region, and central Ukraine. Kyiv City Express trains faced shorter delays of 10 to 30 minutes.

Conflicting reports emerged regarding the extent of the damage to transport hubs. JSC Ukrzaliznytsia stated that the capital's railway stations remained undamaged and passenger traffic was not stopped. However, European Union Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Mathernova contradicted this assessment, stating that passenger trains and railway facilities were damaged during the morning strike.
