Socorro Resident Demands Removal of Flock Safety Surveillance Cameras

Matt Kennicott is calling for Socorro County to dismantle an automated license-plate-reader network installed without a public vote by the County Commission.

Matt Kennicott, a resident of Socorro, is demanding the immediate removal of seven automated license-plate-reader cameras installed by Flock Safety throughout Socorro County. The surveillance network was established after the county manager signed an agreement that bypassed a public vote by the County Commission.

Kennicott argues the system violates Fourth Amendment protections against warrantless mass surveillance. He cites specific concerns regarding data security, including reports of exposed feeds and unauthorized access by federal agencies, as well as technological errors that have led to wrongful detentions in other jurisdictions.

To address these issues, Kennicott has urged the Socorro County Commission to release the contract and audit logs, suspend the current camera operations, and vote to terminate the agreement. He maintains that the county must prioritize constitutional liberty over government efficiency.
