Federal Workers Sue Trump Administration Over Gender-Affirming Care Ban

Five federal employees filed a class-action lawsuit on Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against the United States Office of Personnel Management and the Trump administration. The plaintiffs allege the agency unlawfully eliminated health insurance coverage for gender-affirming care, including hormonal and surgical procedures, for federal and Postal Service employees, retirees, and their families.

The lawsuit, filed by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, argues that the categorical denial of treatment constitutes sex discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. According to the complaint, plaintiffs have faced canceled treatment plans and medical bills exceeding $100,000. While the agency previously allowed some exceptions for individuals mid-treatment, the lawsuit notes these exceptions are scheduled for complete elimination by 2027.
