Walmart Becomes Second-Fastest Growing US EV Charging Network

Walmart Inc. is rapidly expanding its proprietary high-speed EV charging network across the United States to increase in-store sales and vehicle accessibility.

Walmart Inc. has emerged as the second-fastest growing high-speed electric vehicle (EV) charging network in the United States for the second quarter, trailing only Tesla. Through June 2026, the company opened approximately 46 high-speed public charging stations with 380 cords. Chargers are now available at 326 of the company's 4,600 U.S. stores, with another 300 stations currently under construction.

After hosting third-party chargers since 2018, the retailer shifted to its own proprietary branding for all stations in March 2025. The company is leveraging its extensive real estate footprint to offer charging rates lower than the national average, aiming to convert the idle time spent charging into shopping opportunities. This strategy coincides with a recovery in the U.S. EV market, where demand has risen due to gas price spikes linked to the Iran War following a previous slump caused by the expiration of federal incentives in September.

Other major retailers including Target Corp., Costco Wholesale Corp., Home Depot Inc., and Lowe's Companies Inc. also operate charging stations. However, Walmart's aggressive expansion is part of a broader industry trend where big-box retailers use charging infrastructure to strengthen core business and increase store sales.
