ECB Economist Warns AI May Weaken Worker Bargaining Power

Philip Lane warns that AI adoption could suppress wage growth and tighten financial conditions across the euro area.

European Central Bank Chief Economist Philip Lane warned that the adoption of artificial intelligence by euro zone companies may weaken the bargaining power of workers. Speaking in Dublin, Lane noted that while AI has not yet altered employment trends, muted hiring plans are limiting the ability of workers to demand higher compensation despite high inflation, which could moderate wage growth and reduce the labor share of total income.

Lane also highlighted a connection between global AI investment and monetary pressure. He stated that heavy global borrowing to fund AI technologies is driving up long-term interest rates, creating a material tightening of financial conditions within the euro area. This shift serves as a relevant factor for the European Central Bank as it determines its monetary policy stance.

Despite these short-term risks, Lane suggested that AI could provide long-term economic benefits. He indicated that the technology could raise potential output and trend growth, helping Europe offset the economic impact of a projected decline in the working-age population.
