Drone Sightings Suspend Flights at Tan Son Nhat Airport
Tan Son Nhat International Airport suspended all flight operations twice on August 11 after multiple drones were spotted near aircraft operating areas.
Flight operations at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City were suspended twice on the evening of August 11, 2026, following multiple drone sightings near aircraft operating areas. The first disruption began at 6:28 pm after flight 3S621 reported a drone 500 meters away at 1,800 feet, and flight VJ601 reported another sighting at 3,000 feet.
Operations resumed at 7:16 pm after the Southern Airports Authority granted permission. However, authorities suspended take-offs and landings again at 7:40 pm when another unmanned aerial vehicle was detected moving west-southwest of the airport. Normal operations finally resumed at 8:34 pm.
The disruptions affected numerous flights from carriers including Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, Singapore Airlines, and Malaysia Airlines. Airport authorities activated a UAV response plan for airspace violations to maintain safety during the evening peak period. Deputy Director Nguyễn Công Hoàn confirmed the timeline of the suspensions and the eventual return to normal service.
