European Central Bank Unveils Shortlisted Euro Banknote Designs

The European Central Bank unveiled ten shortlisted design proposals for the next series of euro banknotes on July 23, 2026. This represents the first complete redesign of the currency since 2002. The proposals, selected from over 1,200 submissions by EU graphic designers and narrowed by a jury of 21 experts, are divided into two themes: European culture, featuring figures such as Leonardo da Vinci and Marie Curie, and Rivers and birds, focusing on European institutions and natural ecosystems.

To finalize the selection, the bank launched a public online survey open until September 21, 2026, which will be complemented by a representative sample survey from an independent research firm. The redesign aims to improve environmental sustainability, accessibility for visually impaired users, and security features. The Governing Council is expected to make a final decision by the end of 2026 based on the survey results, technical assessments, and independent jury conclusions.

President Christine Lagarde presented the proposals, stating that the bank considers it important to hear the voice of the people to whom the banknotes belong. New banknotes will enter circulation in subsequent years, though the previous series will remain legal tender and continue to retain their value.
