Greg Abel Leads Berkshire Hathaway Through First Year as CEO
Berkshire Hathaway CEO Greg Abel executed $16.5 billion in acquisitions and expanded Alphabet holdings during his first year leading the conglomerate.
Berkshire Hathaway will file its next 13F report on November 16, 2026, marking the conclusion of Greg Abel's first year as CEO. The filing will disclose US-listed long stock positions as of September 30, 2026, and will be closely watched to determine if recent investment shifts are permanent.
During 2026, Abel executed two major acquisitions totaling approximately $16.5 billion. In January, the company acquired OxyChem, the former petrochemical division of Occidental Petroleum, for $9.7 billion, and in July, it closed a $6.8 billion acquisition of homebuilder Taylor Morrison. These moves utilized less than 5% of the company's $365.5 billion cash balance as of the second quarter.
Abel has maintained a strategy of portfolio concentration for the company's $362 billion investment portfolio. As of October 2026, seven stocks account for roughly 71% of the portfolio, led by Apple at $78.55 billion. While Abel liquidated 16 non-core positions in the first quarter, he retained legacy holdings in American Express, Coca-Cola, and Bank of America. He specifically expanded Berkshire's position in Alphabet through a $10 billion investment in a secondary offering, citing the growth of AI solutions within Google Cloud.
Energy remains a priority under Abel's leadership, with Chevron and Occidental Petroleum comprising over 10% of invested assets. Analysts suggest these actions indicate a disciplined approach and a slow pivot toward synergistic deals compared to the independent operating model favored by former CEO Warren Buffett.
