APC Faces Mass Defections in Adamawa State
Kabiru Mijinyawa and other party chieftains defected from the APC to rival parties, citing a lack of internal democracy during primary elections.
Former Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly Kabiru Mijinyawa defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Action People’s Movement (APM) on September 14, 2026. Mijinyawa attributed his departure to a lack of transparency, rule of law, and internal democracy during recent party primaries.
His exit is part of a broader exodus of party members. Hundreds of chieftains led by Tahir Shehu also moved to the APM, while Peter Fwa and his supporters joined the Labour Party after Fwa was replaced as the APC candidate for the Adamawa Southern Senatorial District. Additionally, Abdulraman Haske, who allegedly lost the APC governorship ticket to Ahmad Galadima, has secured the governorship ticket for the APM.
APC publicity secretary Dogo Victor dismissed the wave of departures as political tourism. He maintained that the party remains strong at the grassroots level, citing the performance of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri as a stabilizing factor.
