Ray Dalio Defends Gold Over Bitcoin as Safe Haven

Ray Dalio argues that gold is the only reliable long-term safe-haven asset, criticizing Bitcoin's privacy and security risks during an appearance on the All-In Podcast.

Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, asserted during a March 2026 appearance on the All-In Podcast that gold is the only true safe-haven asset. He dismissed Bitcoin as a substitute for gold, arguing that the cryptocurrency functions as a risk asset with high correlation to tech stocks rather than a reliable store of value. Dalio cited Bitcoin's lack of central bank backing, its vulnerability to quantum computing, and a lack of privacy due to its public ledger as primary weaknesses.

Dalio emphasized that gold's physical limitations and global recognition make it the most established money and a critical diversifier as the U.S.-led world order breaks down amid economic disorder and a conflict between the United States and Iran. He recommended that investors maintain a 5% to 15% portfolio allocation in gold. Despite his critiques, Dalio maintains a 1% allocation of Bitcoin in his own portfolio.

Cryptocurrency experts from Bitwise, Galaxy, and VanEck countered these claims, suggesting that Dalio's arguments rely on outdated narratives. They argued that Bitcoin's digital-era architecture provides real-world utility that gold cannot match and that developers are actively addressing quantum risks. Some analysts suggested that these perceived vulnerabilities are already priced into Bitcoin's market valuation, presenting an investment opportunity.
