ASML and Intel Pursue Divergent AI Chip Market Strategies

ASML Holding maintains dominance in lithography equipment while Intel transitions to a foundry model supported by U.S. government funding.

The 2026 AI chip market is being shaped by the contrasting business models of ASML Holding and Intel. ASML continues to hold a monopoly as the only provider of extreme ultraviolet lithography machines, which are required to produce the world's most advanced semiconductors. This dominance is reflected in its fiscal 2025 results, where the company reported nearly $37.5 billion in revenue and approximately $11.0 billion in net income.

Intel is pursuing a different path by transitioning toward a foundry business model. This strategy involves manufacturing chips for external customers while continuing to design its own products. However, this transition has coincided with financial strain; Intel reported fiscal 2025 revenue of nearly $52.9 billion but suffered a net loss of approximately $267.0 million.

To support its domestic manufacturing goals, Intel integrated more closely with the U.S. government in August 2025. The company issued a 10% equity stake to the federal government in exchange for $8.9 billion in funding to bolster its production capabilities.
