Pakistan Labels Kashmir Protesters Enemies as Election Violence Escalates

Violent clashes have intensified in Pakistan-administered Kashmir between security forces and the now-banned Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). The group, protesting the manipulation of legislative assembly seats, claims at least 20 activists have been killed since Monday. Conversely, Pakistani authorities dispute these figures, asserting that masked protesters opened fire on security personnel on July 28, killing one paramilitary officer. Federal ministers, including Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Deputy Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry, allege that militants from the Pakistani Taliban infiltrated protest camps to sabotage elections.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has refused further dialogue, categorizing the protesters as enemies of Pakistan. Regional security forces report seizing assault rifles and identifying suspects with sniper training during operations to disperse camps in cities like Muzaffarabad and Mirpur. These disturbances coincided with the first phase of legislative assembly elections, where the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz won nine of 13 seats amid rigging allegations from the Pakistan Peoples Party and a boycott by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

The Government of India condemned the elections as a cover for human rights violations and illegal occupation. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Indian External Affairs Ministry, asserted that the region remains an integral and inalienable part of India, suggesting the unrest is a direct result of Pakistan's administrative oppression and economic exploitation.
