King Haakon VIII Takes Oath of Office Before Storting

King Haakon VIII took his oath of office before the Storting on September 3, 2026, officially ascending the throne following the death of King Harald on August 28. During the ceremony, the new king adopted the motto All for Norway and expressed hope that the relationship between the monarchy and the parliament would continue to develop in line with future national challenges.

Storting president Masud Gharahkhani presided over the session, stating that the monarchy and democracy are interconnected. The transition was supported by approximately 1,000 personnel from the National Guard and military branches, with additional police assistance provided by Sweden. Queen Sonja attended the event, while Queen Mette-Marit was absent due to health complications following a lung transplant.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 22, accompanied her father as the heir to the throne. By signing the register at the Royal Palace, she gained the authority to act as regent and attend cabinet meetings.
