DWP Confirms PIP Mobility Benefit Eligibility for Blue Badges

The Department for Work and Pensions confirmed that recipients of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) may be eligible for Blue Badge parking permits. This benefit is available at a lower rate of £30.30 per week or a higher rate of £80 per week for individuals with long-term physical or mental health conditions that impede their ability to move around, leave their home, or follow routes.

According to the Department for Transport, claimants automatically qualify for a Blue Badge if they cannot walk more than 50 metres. These permits last up to three years and vary in cost by region, charging up to £10 in England and £20 in Scotland, while remaining free in Wales.

Beyond parking permits, the mobility benefit can unlock additional support, including vehicle tax exemptions and Disabled Persons Railcards. Those receiving the higher rate of PIP can access Motability Scheme vehicles. Eligible individuals may also receive discounts on local bus travel and Council Tax.
