Former Lululemon CIO Warns Against Corporate AI Washing
Julie Averill warns that corporations prioritize AI hype over technical strategy, leading to failed pilots and widespread employee distrust.
Julie Averill, the former Chief Information Officer of Lululemon, warns that corporations are engaging in AI wishing and AI washing by prioritizing superficial titles and hype over substantive technical strategy. She argues that companies often treat artificial intelligence as a magic solution to complex business problems while ignoring the slow, necessary work of cleaning legacy data and systems.
This gap between corporate promises and reality is supported by a Project NANDA report from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which found that 95 percent of enterprise generative AI pilots failed to deliver results. Averill specifically criticizes AI layoffs, where companies reduce staff for efficiency under the guise of AI only to rehire for similar roles later.
These deceptive claims have fueled significant employee distrust. A survey conducted by Writer and Workplace Intelligence indicates that 44 percent of Gen Z workers are actively sabotaging AI rollouts. Additionally, 75 percent of executives admit their AI strategy is more for show.
