Explosions Hit Syrian Army Weapons Depot Near Al-Eis

A powerful explosion struck a Syrian Arab Army weapons depot near the town of al-Eis in the southern Aleppo countryside early Monday, September 21, 2026. The initial blast triggered a series of subsequent explosions that scattered shrapnel across the region and forced the evacuation of nearby families.

Azzam al-Gharib, the Governor of Aleppo, urged residents to remain indoors while the Internal Security Command closed roads leading to the site and the Aleppo-Damascus highway to ensure civilian safety. Civil defense teams reported four injuries in the al-Hadaba area west of al-Eis, including one civilian hit by shrapnel and two people suffering from breathing difficulties. One person was injured in a traffic accident while fleeing the area. These reports contradicted an initial statement from the Ministry of Defense, which claimed there were no casualties and that damage was limited to property.

The Ministry of Defense has opened an investigation into the cause of the blast. Officials noted that they are also investigating explosions at several other military sites. This incident follows a pattern of recent military site blasts in Syria, including a weapons depot explosion in Idlib earlier this month that killed 14 people and a fatal explosion in Deir Ezzor on September 19.
