Volvo and Nvidia Partner for Point-to-Point Automated Driving

Volvo Cars is expanding its partnership with Nvidia to launch a Level 2++ partially automated driving system across its entire vehicle lineup by 2030.

Volvo Cars announced an expanded partnership with Nvidia to deploy a hands-free, point-to-point partially automated driving system by 2030. Categorized as Level 2++, the system will allow vehicles to navigate complex urban environments, including unprotected left turns and traffic lights, across all electric, plug-in hybrid, and gas-powered models.

The technology utilizes Nvidia's Hyperion sensor and compute architecture, the Alpamayo driving software stack, and the Halos safety evaluation layer. Volvo will integrate these AI tools with its own proprietary connected safety and driver-understanding systems. The first vehicle featuring this tech stack is expected to debut before the end of the decade.

This strategic shift follows several setbacks for the automaker, including the bankruptcy of lidar supplier Luminar and the sidelining of its Ride Pilot Level 3 system in the United States due to regulatory hurdles. Alwin Bakkenes, head of global software engineering at Volvo Cars, noted that the company has migrated from traditional car-line-based development into being a full-tech stack company.
