India Rejects Elon Musk's Claims of Satcom Monopoly
The Indian government denied allegations by Elon Musk that oligarchs blocked Starlink's market entry, stating that licensing delays were due to SpaceX's own late filing.
The Indian government has rejected claims by Elon Musk that powerful business interests blocked Starlink from entering the satellite communication market to maintain a monopolistic grip. Musk alleged that certain oligarchs were obstructing the service to protect their own profits, arguing that competition would benefit Indian citizens by providing more choices and affordable pricing.
Responding to these allegations, the Ministry of Communications of India clarified that the licensing process is transparent and uniform. Government sources noted that Starlink was the last of three companies—including Jio and Eutelsat OneWeb—to submit its application and required compliance documents, which caused the delay in its approval.
While all three providers have now secured licenses, they cannot begin commercial operations until they fulfill security requirements and the government finalizes the framework for spectrum allocation and pricing. Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia reiterated that the government will not permit any monopoly within the sector.
