Apple Partners With LG for Smart Home Expansion

Apple is partnering with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric to launch a suite of smart home devices and a new AI-powered hub on October 13.

Apple Inc. is expanding its smart home ecosystem to challenge Amazon and Google, culminating in a Welcome Home event scheduled for October 13 in New York City. The company plans to unveil first-party hardware, including a smart home hub featuring a six-inch display and a tiltable arm, an updated HomePod mini, and a new Apple TV model. These devices will utilize upgraded processors to support a reimagined Siri AI and a new operating system called homeOS.

To broaden its hardware offerings, Apple has entered second-party development arrangements with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. LG will manufacture and support a branded lineup including a video doorbell, a smart deadbolt lock with ultra-wideband technology for proximity unlocking, and various security cameras. Schneider Electric is rumored to produce thermostats and temperature and humidity sensors. While LG handles production, Apple oversees the design and engineering to ensure deep integration with its rebooted HomeKit platform, which now supports Matter and Thread protocols.

Regulatory filings with UL Solutions confirm the existence of the LG devices, though they are not expected to reach consumers for several months following the October 13 event. The announcement of this expansion has already triggered price drops for global smart home stocks, including Resideo and Arlo Technologies. Beyond the home ecosystem, Apple may use the event to promote its iPhone Duo folding phone, with further hardware releases like a MacBook Ultra anticipated in November.
