Tesla Opposes New Jersey Bill Mandating Robotaxi Sensors
Tesla is lobbying against a proposed New Jersey bill that would effectively ban its camera-only autonomous driving system by requiring LiDAR and radar sensors.
A proposed bill in New Jersey seeks to establish a three-year pilot program for fully autonomous vehicles, requiring companies to complete 50,000 miles of incident-free supervised testing before removing human monitors. The legislation mandates that robotaxis be equipped with cameras and at least two additional sensor types, such as LiDAR and radar.
Tesla Inc. is opposing the measure because the company relies exclusively on cameras and AI for its autonomous driving system. Tesla claims the legislation is designed to ban the company from the New Jersey market rather than prioritizing safety outcomes. The company has urged its customers to contact state representatives to fight the bill.
Elon Musk has consistently advocated for a camera-only approach, arguing that additional sensors like LiDAR and radar create safety risks due to sensor contention. New York is reportedly considering similar legislation with comparable hardware requirements.
