ICRC Warns of Deepening Global Humanitarian Crisis

The International Committee of the Red Cross warns that proliferating armed conflicts and climate shocks are driving a record global humanitarian crisis.

The International Committee of the Red Cross warned of a deepening global humanitarian crisis during World Humanitarian Day on August 19. Director-General Pierre Krahenbuhl stated that the proliferation of armed conflicts, particularly in the Middle East, indicates that the promise of the UN Charter to treat conflict as a last resort has been ignored.

This crisis is compounded by record displacement and severe funding shortages. United Nations data shows that over 252 million people required urgent assistance by May 2026. By the end of 2025, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees recorded 41.6 million refugees and 68.7 million internally displaced persons globally.

Krahenbuhl noted that climate shocks disproportionately impact impoverished and conflict-affected communities. He further highlighted that humanitarian access in major conflict zones has become increasingly difficult as the number of global conflicts rises.
