Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Purges Senior Army Leadership

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired or forced out numerous senior Army officers, reducing the number of active-duty four-star generals from ten in January 2025 to five. The purge included the April dismissal of Chief of Staff General Randy George, leaving the service without a permanent top leader. Other affected officers include General David M. Hodne and General James Mingus, while Army Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll is expected to depart the administration soon.

General Christopher LaNeve currently serves as both acting chief and vice chief of staff, though he lacks the Senate support required for permanent confirmation. President Donald Trump stated that the firing of General George was Hegseth's decision, adding, "Tell the general I’m sorry."

Critics, including Senator Joni Ernst and Representative Pat Ryan, warn that these removals compromise military readiness against Russia, China, and Iran, specifically regarding missile and drone defense. They further argue the purge damages the nonpartisan nature of the military. General LaNeve has cautioned that "Every shortcut in training and lapse in discipline will be paid for in blood."
