Shell Shelves Aphrodite Gas Project in Trinidad and Tobago

Shell has shelved the Aphrodite offshore gas project in Trinidad and Tobago following a failure to reach an agreement on commercial terms with the National Gas Company. The decision comes despite a positive final investment decision made last year for the project, which was projected to produce roughly 100 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.

As part of the suspension, the company has released the jack-up rig previously contracted for drilling production wells. The move represents a significant setback for Trinidad and Tobago, the largest LNG exporter in Latin America, as the nation attempts to reverse a decline in natural gas output that has already hindered LNG exports and petrochemical production.

Shell continues to evaluate the integrated project schedule and remains involved in other regional initiatives. These include cross-border gas developments with Venezuela designed to replenish supplies for Atlantic LNG.
