Paramount Negotiates to Retain Mark Thompson as CNN CEO

Paramount CEO David Ellison is negotiating to keep Mark Thompson as CNN chief following the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

Paramount CEO David Ellison is negotiating to retain Mark Thompson as the chief executive of CNN for at least one year following the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The deal, valued between $81 billion and $111 billion, is expected to close on October 6. While Ellison has approached Thompson about remaining in his role, no agreement has been finalized as Thompson seeks guarantees of broad editorial autonomy.

To resolve an antitrust suit led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and a coalition of 11 other states, Paramount agreed to establish a five-member News Editorial Independence Board within 180 days of closing. This board is intended to ensure journalists at both CNN and CBS News can operate without corporate interference. Ellison has also appointed former Mattel leader Ynon Kreiz as co-CEO of the combined entity.

The merger will place CNN and CBS News under the same corporate parent, though current plans indicate that the leadership of CBS News will not have editorial or operational oversight of CNN. This structure aims to address concerns from CNN journalists and anchor Anderson Cooper regarding independent authority.

Financial pressures loom over the combined company, which will face $80 billion in debt. Consequently, CNN's projected $650 million annual profit is viewed as a critical revenue source, even as the company plans to cut billions in costs. Separately, the White House has banned CNN and other outlets from its grounds, citing negative coverage of President Trump.
