Namibia Secures $63 Million for Massive Conservation Project

The Government of Namibia signed a N$1 billion agreement to protect 20 million hectares of land through Africa's first Project Finance for Permanence model.

The Government of Namibia signed the Namibia for Life Project Finance for Permanence initiative on May 20, 2026, securing a conservation financing agreement worth over N$1 billion, or approximately US$63 million. This agreement marks the first implementation of the Project Finance for Permanence model in Africa, designed to protect more than 20 million hectares of land, which accounts for over 20% of the country's total area.

The initiative establishes a long-term framework of funding, policies, and systems to sustain conservation efforts. The financing structure includes an endowment fund and a Socio-Economic Development Fund intended to drive job creation, support local enterprises, and improve infrastructure. The program currently supports 87 communal conservancies and aims to expand to 100, providing benefits to more than 283,000 people who rely on natural resources.

The Community Conservation Fund of Namibia will manage the financing mechanism. The project is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, the Enduring Earth collaboration, and international partners including WWF Namibia and the Impact Tank Analysis Foundation.
