Namibia Cyber Agency Warns Against Circulating Leaked Data

The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia urges the public and media to stop disseminating leaked personal data to prevent a second wave of victimisation.

The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN), through its Cyber Security Incident Response Team (NAM-CSIRT), issued a warning regarding the shared responsibility of data protection and the ethics of handling leaked information. The agency advised the public to adopt secure digital habits, including the use of strong passwords and multi-factor authentication, to prevent unauthorized access to personal data.

CRAN expressed specific concern over a growing trend where the public, digital publishers, and media practitioners analyze and circulate data obtained from breaches. The agency warned that this practice creates a "second wave of victimisation" for the original victims of the cyber incidents.

Officials urged media practitioners and the public to avoid disseminating personal identifiers or sensitive details from unlawfully obtained information. Instead, the agency requested that such data be referred to the relevant authorities to prevent further harm to affected individuals.
