DVLA Mandates ADHD Reporting for Safe Driving

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency issued guidance requiring drivers to report attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or related medications if they affect the ability to drive safely. This requirement applies to holders of provisional and full licences for cars, motorcycles, buses, coaches, and lorries. While not all individuals with ADHD must notify the agency, those who fail to do so when their condition impacts safety risk fines of up to £1,000.

The agency warned that drivers could face prosecution if they are involved in an accident as a result of an unreported condition. Additionally, drivers may voluntarily surrender their licences if a medical condition prevents them from meeting driving standards for three months or more.

NHS England reported that approximately 2,498,000 people in England had ADHD as of February 2026.
