China and US Lead Global Data Center Power Surge

Global data center power consumption is projected to triple by 2030, driven by AI growth and massive infrastructure investments in China, India, and the United States.

Global data center power consumption is projected to triple by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 21.1%. This surge is driven by generative AI and high-density GPU workloads, leading GlobalData and Gartner to forecast massive electricity demand increases, with Gartner predicting a 26.4% jump in 2026 alone. While the United States and China currently dominate the market, China is expected to surpass the U.S. by 2030 to become the largest single market.

Government interventions are accelerating this expansion. The United States issued an Executive Order in July 2025 to speed up federal permitting, while China has implemented a strategy to expand infrastructure in its western regions. India has also emerged as a major player, accounting for 14.1% of global construction growth between 2020 and 2030, trailing only China. This construction boom is expected to add 10% to 15% to the total global construction market by 2030.

To manage the resulting thermal demands of AI, the industry is shifting toward liquid cooling solutions, a market projected to reach nearly $30 billion by 2033. Supermicro recently introduced a high-impedance coolant to reduce short-circuit risks in AI infrastructure. Simultaneously, the edge data center market is expanding toward a projected $105.8 billion by 2033 to support 5G and autonomous systems, with the Asia-Pacific region expected to show the fastest growth.
