Avanti West Coast and Aslef Reach Pay Deal to Avert Strikes

The train operating company Avanti West Coast and the Aslef union have reached a pay agreement to avert potential strikes on key routes connecting London to Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool, and Glasgow. The deal, which received approval from the Department for Transport, provides train drivers with a 3.6% wage increase, placing the raise 0.7% above the current inflation rate.

Beyond the base salary increase, the settlement includes improved terms for union members, such as time-and-a-half pay for Sunday shifts and bonuses of up to £720 for drivers working a fifth day in a single week. This agreement follows a June announcement by Aslef to ballot its members on strike action.

The resolution ensures continued service on critical lines, including the route frequently used by the Prime Minister to travel to No 10 North. The Department for Transport stated that the government has prioritized resolving rail union disputes to improve passenger services and reduce lost revenue burdens on taxpayers.
