Piyush Goyal Sets $1 Trillion Export Target for India

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that India is targeting $1 trillion in goods and services exports this year, representing an increase of approximately $137 billion over the previous year's $863 billion. Speaking at the 66th Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Annual Convention in New Delhi, Goyal urged the automotive sector to deepen localization and reduce import dependence to help close the export gap.

Goyal emphasized that India aims to become a global manufacturing hub by leveraging skill shortages in developed economies and securing rare earths through the Critical Mineral Mission. He noted that Indian exports reached approximately $317 billion in the first four months of the year, an increase of $36 billion to $37 billion over the same period last year.

Regarding international trade, Goyal stated that a bilateral trade agreement with the United States will only be finalized once Washington provides Indian exporters with a preferential tariff advantage over competing nations. While he asserted that no Indian sensitivities have been compromised in the proposed agreement, he maintained that India seeks win-win arrangements to protect agriculture, fisheries, and small businesses. India is also pursuing further trade arrangements with the European Union and New Zealand.
