American Airlines Tightens Refund Policy for Cancelled Flights
American Airlines updated its refund policy to limit full reimbursements to passengers who cancel within 24 hours of booking for flights departing at least one week later.
American Airlines implemented a more restrictive refund policy on August 1, 2026. Under the new rules, passengers are eligible for a full refund only if they cancel their trip within 24 hours of booking and the flight is scheduled for at least one week after the booking date.
This update replaces a previous policy that allowed full refunds if the departure date was within two days of booking. The company shifted its practices to align with the existing refund policies used by United Airlines, JetBlue, and Southwest.
