NERC Warns Texas Power Grid Faces Elevated Winter Risks

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation rated the Texas power grid as having an elevated risk during extreme winter weather. The regulatory body identified a potential shortfall driven by a growing population and the proliferation of cryptocurrency and AI data centers. In an extreme demand scenario similar to Winter Storm Uri, the state could face a 14.9 GW deficit relative to its 70.4 GW of available resources.

Pablo Vegas, president and CEO of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, noted that weatherization and power storage have improved since 2021. While a warmer La Niña winter is predicted, Vegas cautioned that extreme cold snaps remain possible. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas warned that grid constraints will persist if demand continues to outpace infrastructure growth.
