Microsoft Patch KB5124008 Causes Windows 11 Audio Failures

Microsoft confirmed that the KB5124008 security update, released during Patch Tuesday on September 8, causes audio failures on some Windows 11 computers. The bug specifically affects devices using the USB Audio Class 1.0 standard on versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1.

Impacted users experience hardware initialization failures, unresponsive volume controls, and frozen sound settings. In Device Manager, these failures typically appear as a Code 10 error, which disables both speakers and microphones. Users with 3D or 8-channel audio setups are particularly prone to losing sound due to incorrect channel settings.

Microsoft recommends that multichannel users manually switch their audio output to standard two-channel stereo as a temporary workaround. For those experiencing total audio loss, the company suggests using wireless devices or uninstalling the update entirely. A permanent resolution is currently in development and will be delivered in a future update.
