China Urges US to End Research Funding Restrictions

The Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China demanded the United States end discriminatory funding restrictions targeting Chinese universities and technology labs.

The Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China urged the United States on October 23 to end discriminatory measures against Chinese research institutions and respect the facts. The demand follows the imposition of research funding restrictions by the United States Department of Defense on dozens of Chinese universities.

Recent efforts to expand these restrictions include a Republican lawmaker's request to add 58 schools and 62 technology labs to the 1286 list. These labs specifically focus on quantum computing, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence. Any entity collaborating with institutions on this list is barred from receiving US federal research funding.

The Ministry of Commerce stated that these actions coerce US research institutions to take sides and deliberately undermine normal scientific cooperation. The ministry warned that such restrictions will only weaken the scientific and technological progress of the United States.
