Amazon Recruits Former Employees for AI and Cloud Roles
Amazon is rehiring former employees and laid-off workers to fill specialized roles in artificial intelligence and cloud computing through a boomerang hiring initiative.
Amazon.com Inc. is actively recruiting former employees, including those affected by mass layoffs, to fill open positions within its cloud-computing and artificial intelligence businesses. This effort follows the elimination of more than 30,000 jobs over the past year.
Internal recruiter emails identify the effort as Swami's Boomerang Reengagement Initiative, led by Amazon Web Services Vice President Swami Sivasubramanian. The initiative targets specialists in machine learning and AI, with some candidates receiving offers of shortened interview paths. Recruiters have also inquired whether the company's strict return-to-office mandate influenced an employee's original decision to leave, though the company maintains that these in-office expectations remain unchanged.
Amazon is utilizing this strategy to compete for specialized talent against rivals such as Google, OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic. Company spokesperson Haley Silva stated that rehiring former employees is a longstanding companywide practice and not a new program created specifically for AI. This move aligns with a broader industry trend of firms rehiring human workers to manage complex tasks that AI systems cannot handle independently.
