Mayor Mamdani Denies ID Requirements for NYC Grocery Stores

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and city officials have refuted claims that identification will be required to shop at five planned city-owned grocery stores. The stores intend to sell goods at 30 percent below market rates to address skyrocketing grocery prices.

The controversy began after Jeanny Pak, the interim president and CEO of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, mentioned a "library-card-esque" system during a press conference. Pak stated the system would be used to manage who is buying and prevent the bulk reselling of discounted items. Republican politicians and conservative influencers amplified these comments to argue that the city was implementing an ID requirement, using the situation to criticize Democratic opposition to the SAVE Act and nationwide voter ID laws.

Mamdani and his spokespeople clarified that any customer card system would be voluntary, free, and would not require verification of identity, residency, or income. The Mayor's Office stated that a private operator will design the system to monitor sales activity rather than verify shoppers. Joe Calvello, a spokesperson for the mayor, described the claims as a fake news cycle and emphasized that the stores will be open to everyone.
