Elliott Investment Management Demands Northern Star Resources Board Overhaul

Elliott Investment Management LP nominated six board candidates for Northern Star Resources to address lagging shareholder returns and production constraints.

Activist investor Elliott Investment Management LP has demanded a comprehensive board overhaul at Northern Star Resources Ltd., the largest gold miner in Australia. In an open letter published Wednesday, the firm nominated six candidates, including Mark Cutifani and Graham Shuttleworth, to lead an objective strategic and operational review of the company.

Elliott has accumulated a 5.6% stake in the miner since June. The investor argues that shareholder returns have severely lagged behind industry peers, citing production constraints at the company's Kalgoorlie processing plant as a primary cause. Elliott stated that a company with assets of Northern Star's calibre should be among the sector's strongest performers.

This demand follows a previous campaign by Elliott that pushed for a new chief executive and the potential sale of the business. In response to those pressures, Northern Star appointed Suresh Vadnagra to replace outgoing CEO Stuart Tonkin, with Vadnagra's term beginning October 5. Elliott maintains that the scale of change required remains significant.
