Widespread Rail and Tube Disruptions Hit London Network

A series of infrastructure failures caused widespread transport chaos across London from August 10 to 11, 2026. The most persistent issue began early Monday with a water leak in a tunnel between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow Airport. Network Rail closed the tunnel for safety, suspending Elizabeth line services to Heathrow Terminals 4 and 5 and reducing Heathrow Express frequency to two trains per hour from London Paddington. This disruption continued into Tuesday, August 11, with severe delays and cancellations remaining in effect.

Additional incidents on Monday included a trackside fire near Purley that delayed Gatwick Airport services and a broken-down train at Gidea Park station. The latter caused 12-to-15-minute delays for Greater Anglia passengers traveling between Essex and London Liverpool Street, forcing several departures to start from alternative stations.

By Tuesday, the network faced further crises. A power and points failure between Clapham Junction and Watford Junction led Southern trains to cancel or revise services for the day. Simultaneously, the London Underground reported severe delays on the Bakerloo line and the District line following a fire alert between Wimbledon and Edgware Road. The London Overground also reduced services on the Windrush and Mildmay lines until 3 p.m. due to driver shortages.
