China Transport Investment Peaks Amid Overbuilding Concerns
The Government of China faces questions over potential overbuilding of transport networks as infrastructure investment reaches a peak.
The Government of China has reached a peak in its investment in transport infrastructure, sparking debate over whether the nation has overbuilt its network of high-speed rail lines and expressways.
Recent projects highlight the scale of this expansion, including the Huajiang bridge in Guizhou province. Opened in September 2025, the structure is the world's highest bridge, featuring a 1,400-metre steel deck suspended 625 metres above a river. Officials state the engineering project reduces travel time across the canyon from two hours to two minutes.
