Tanzania Parliament Unanimously Approves Deogratius Ndejembi as Vice President

Tanzania's Parliament unanimously approved Deogratius John Ndejembi as the new Vice President on August 28, 2026, with all 324 lawmakers voting in favor of the nomination. Ndejembi, a former Minister for Energy and Member of Parliament for Chamwino, was officially sworn into office at State House in Dodoma on August 29.

Ndejembi succeeds Emmanuel Nchimbi, who announced his resignation on August 25. While Nchimbi initially planned to leave office on September 4, Attorney-General Hamza Johari clarified that he ceased to be Vice President on August 26 following his expulsion from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party for alleged ethics violations.

During his approval process, Ndejembi pledged to serve as a bridge to all Tanzanians regardless of religion or political ideology, stating the role is a responsibility to the entire nation. Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba supported the appointment, citing Ndejembi's extensive government experience.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan characterized the appointment as a consensus decision to return the vice presidency to the youth to continue nurturing them in leadership. She urged Ndejembi to grow in wisdom and sound judgment to execute the responsibilities of the office.
