IMF Urges Bank of Japan to Accelerate Rate Hikes

The International Monetary Fund advised the Bank of Japan to accelerate interest rate hikes if inflation exceeds forecasts. Speaking at the annual IMF meetings in Bangkok, Krishna Srinivasan, director of the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department, stated that the central bank is "doing the right thing" by normalizing monetary policy but warned that tightening must remain data-dependent to prevent inflation expectations from becoming un-anchored.
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda reaffirmed the bank's resolve to raise rates to anchor underlying inflation around a 2% target. The central bank previously raised rates to a 31-year high of 1.25% in September.
Beyond monetary policy, the IMF urged Japan to establish a medium-term fiscal framework. This recommendation aims to address market concerns regarding fiscal risks linked to government spending plans and a proposed consumption tax cut scheduled for April 2027.
