India Urges UN Investigation Into Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir Killings
The Government of India called for an impartial UN investigation into killings of protesters by Pakistani security forces in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
The Government of India requested an impartial investigation into the killing of protesters by Pakistani security forces in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking during the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly Third Committee, First Secretary Anuj Swarup urged the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to report on the situation and ensure due process for detained leaders of the Awami Action Committee.
India's demand follows intensifying unrest led by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee over government inaction and the handling of demonstrations. Protesters have specifically denounced indiscriminate firing by Pakistani forces in Rawalakot and alleged that elections held in July were rigged. India further called for the lifting of internet restrictions currently imposed in the region.
In its address to the UN, India cautioned the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights against using selectivity and double standards, stating that such an approach erodes trust in multilateralism.
